Year 1/ 2 Overview

At Caen we have two Year 1 and two Year 2 classes. Year 1 are taught by Mrs Symcox and Mrs Darling and Mrs Laverty respectively; and Year 2 are taught by Mr Preston and Miss Read. The children will also be taught weekly by Mr Harvey for computing and Miss Fogarty for PE. You can download the current term's learning overview below.

For maths the school is planning using the White Rose scheme of work ( https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ ) and teachers also use a variety of other resources such as Nrich ( http://nrich.maths.org ) and the National Centre for the Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics ( http://www.nctem.org.uk ). These sites all have free to download resources and materials should parents be interested and all the White Rose Maths materials are free to download. On the Nrich site you can search by maths topic or age. Furthermore all children have their own Times Table Rock Stars login - please do use daily. We also have access to My Maths ( https://www.mymaths.co.uk/ ). The school login is: Braunton1 and the password is: tangent296. There are lessons and games for all stages and levels - just ensure that the curriculum drop down menu (left-hand side) is set to 'English National Curriuculum'.

For reading we encourage children to challenge themselves with the Pie Corbett Reading Spine. Pie Corbett is recognised as one of the pre-eminent educationalists with regards to literacy and he has selected appropriate books for every age group. These can be found on the Scholastic site here: https://www.scholastic.co.uk/piecorbett/resources . Below we have also included recommended reads for each year group - these are all high quality texts that will give your child a rich and varied diet. Oxford Owl have opened up their online reading platform for all here: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/ . Devon Libraries has a a wealth of ebooks and they can be found here: https://librariesunlimited.overdrive.com/ .

For fun science quizes that are linked to the curriculum please see: https://www.educationquizzes.com/ks1/science/

If you would like any further information about the curriculum please make an appointment to see your child's teacher in the first instance.

Year 1 Home Learning Overview

Please find below daily activities for your child to complete during the Summer Term of school closure.

Reading -  read every day and record it in your reading journal. At least once a week, think of a question for someone to answer about your book. The ARK mastery English sequences also have some reading activities which can easily be followed on a week by week basis.

The Oxford Owl website https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk has a range of reading, writing and maths resources which are free for parents and children.  The e-library has books from your child’s colour band which have comprehension/sequencing activities to be completed after reading. Your child should know their book colour (if not then please email us). The book band colour of each book should be on the top left of the front cover or the top right of the back cover.

A reminder of our book band colours: red, green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, blue.

Just login using the My class login: year1caen  Password: year1

Spelling - work through the list of Year 1 Common Exception Words below, making sure you can spell all of the words correctly before moving on to the Year 2 list.

Writing - ARK mastery English sequences – We have added these sequences to support learning at home. Everything you need, easy to follow and covers lots of key writing skills.

Maths- Please practice counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s forwards and backwards from 0 or any given number.

Learning place value in numbers beyond 20 by reading, writing, counting and comparing numbers up to 100. Ask what facts your child knows about numbers to 100. What is 1 more/1 less and 10 more/10 less than a number?

White Rose Home learning- There are now online resources for Year 1 that can be accessed here: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/  . This resource has been organised into lessons (same as below). Each lesson consists of both a teaching video and activity. We suggest that you watch the video with your child and get your child to complete the learning activity independently or with help from an adult. We will leave the teaching slides on this area of the website for you to use at home if you wish. The first week of learning is Making Doubles and Sharing.

MyMaths- We now have access to MyMaths online which can be accessed here: https://login.mymaths.co.uk/login . You will need to login using username: Braunton1 password: tangent296. This is a great resource with plenty of interactive activities for you to use at home. We have included a screen shot below to help you navigate to the Year 1 Multiplication and Division activities on the website. We suggest that you use this resource alongside the White Rose Home Learning. Each lesson has a learning activity to do. You can also go over previous learning with your child. For example, under Geometry there are a number of shape activities that you can recap over. Just make sure that there is a Y1 (Year 1) next to the heading that you have selected.

Our topic this half term is Emergency. We have included a Topic Web below which has a description of what your child will cover this term. We have also included:

Geography and History – Emergency!

Follow the topic session guide (see below) and investigate where the emergency services are situated in our village. Create a street map and produce a fire station fact file.

Digimap have updated us to the new version which now includes world mapping as well as the previously accessible OS, aerial and historical UK maps.

There is a tutorial here https://digimapforschools.edina.ac.uk/ on the 'Take a Tour' link and there are homeschooling activities here https://digimapforschools.edina.ac.uk/resources/scavengerhunt/

  • Map the journey to a family member's house

  • Which school play area is the biggest?  Measure the area of the playgrounds and field

Y2 Maths Greater Depth

If Your child is at a Greater Depth level for Maths please use this document by NCETM for Greater Depth and Mastery style questions based on the Year 2 National Curriculum. This document is a really useful resource for giving you ideas for the types of questions you can use with your child. The questions are challenging and require children to use their problem solving and reasoning skills to develop their overall mathematical fluency.
