Science

At Caen school, our science vision is for all children to experience science as an integral part of their academic journey through the use of hands-on learning and explorative study which creates excitement and curiosity. We aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of science and wish to encourage our young scientists to see how this effects them in their world.

Our principles of science learning

At Caen school, the 6 main principles of science learning are-

  1. Children will use scientific vocabulary confidently to explain their understanding.
  2. Children are supported in planning and carrying out practical investigations collaboratively.
  3. Children are excited and curious about science and are able to ask questions which develop their understanding.
  4. Children are able to make links with the changing world around them.
  5. Children have the benefit of enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers to facilitate their learning.
  6. Children can see how science links to all areas of the curriculum.

Our winning entries from our science week growing competition.

Most creative- Y6- EH class (grown in an empty glue stick- very eco friendly!), Tallest shoot- Y4 AD/CF class (A gigantic 7.5cm) and Healthiest shoot- Y1 classes (joint effort across both classes). The winning classes will be involved in planting butterfly/bee friendly planters.

Working scientifically skills

Alongside developing their scientific knowledge of key ideas and concepts through specific areas of biology, chemistry and physics, the children will also develop an understanding of the way scientific enquiry is carried out.  This is called their ‘Working Scientifically’ skills.

This understanding of the nature, processes and methods of scientific enquiry progresses throughout their school life under the areas plan, do, record and review.

Types of scientific enquiry

The working scientifically skills are embedded into the curriculum through the following types of scientific enquiry: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources.

PSQM

We are proud to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). This demonstrates our commitment in embedding science and our science principles across the curriculum.
